Chapter Ten

Eben

A week after waking up with my carrier watching over me, I still didn’t feel back to one hundred percent. I was back in my old childhood bedroom. Though many siblings had been born since my debut into the world, somehow, it was the one available for my recovery. I’d come full circle and learn all about walking outside of my body, even if I avoided learning it from my carrier.

Dad thought I’d have realized what was going on and maybe even remembered who I was during my disembodied time if I had trained with him. Still, he kept the lectures short and to the point, because, in the end, Sergei was the only one who truly suffered for what transpired on my trip. My exhaustion would eventually go away with enough rest, hydration, and good home cooked meals. No amount of any of that would unbanish Sergei from his prowl.

My parents checked the mail every day, but we still hadn’t heard from Sergei. Wherever he was, I hoped he was the happiest jaguar in the world and his true-mate understood exactly what he sacrificed to find them.

A sunny afternoon found us on a video call with Douglas and his friend Abel. Only we weren’t staring at either one of them. My stomach was doing flip-flops, and my wolf thumped his tail against my ribs with a gleeful anxiety that made me more exhausted than ever. Only his mood was mine too. On the screen of my tablet, a cup with a pregnancy test was the movie of the hour. Three minutes had never felt so long.

“Are you sure it’s even possible?” Abel’s voice sounded off his long-standing question for the tenth time since the call began.

“Stranger things have happened,” Dad said. “Just relax, Abel. If Douglas is pregnant, you are not the father.”

Everyone laughed, but I wondered too if it was possible. The timing was right for conception, even if it was wrong for the bathroom of the judge’s chambers. Thankfully, the judge seemed amused that Douglas’s first round of pregnancy sickness unfolded during a meeting with him. He loved the timing of the baby just not giving a damn what was going on in the world outside of Douglas’s womb.

Dad and I had given our statements shortly before Douglas called me with the telltale box in hand. My older brothers were still child-free. So, Dad was over the moon at the thought of his first grandchildren. My sire would be, too, when he returned from visiting the Raven Hollow Wolf Pack Territory.

“I see the baby!” Abel was the first to cheer!

He was right. The pixelated baby wrapped in its yellow blanket showed clearly in the pregnancy test’s little window.

“Babe?” I said, wishing Douglas’s face was on the screen.

“Yes?” He said, his voice cracking.

“Are you okay?” I asked, and Dad laughed.

“Are you okay?” Douglas shot the question back at me.

“Abel?” Dad said.

“Yes?” Abel answered.

“Go away. I’m going away too. These two need some time to talk.”

“But I’m having another godpup!” Abel protested; his words traced with laughter.
